Reducing nitrate leaching losses from turfgrass fertilization of residential lawns

چکیده

Abstract Fertilizer applications on lawns have raised environmental concerns in many Canadian municipalities. In this greenhouse study, NO 3 –N leaching losses from Kentucky bluegrass ( Poa pratensis L.) were evaluated two soils (a schist loam and a clay loam) sand/peat moss rootzone mix (80% sand, 20% peat moss). Eight different fertilizer N sources (urea, Polyon 8 12‐wk release, Duration 45 90‐d XCU, corn gluten meal, UFLEXX) assessed at five application rates (25–200 kg ha –1 yr ) frequencies over 8‐wk trials. Average concentration leachate measured levels of 3.5, 7.4, 1.4 mg L turf grown loam, clay, sand respectively, but mostly affected by mineralization organic matter. Turf fertilized with ≥100 generally resulted acceptable visual quality both soils, coated‐urea fertilizers more efficient to reduce leaching. UFLEXX urea (150 200 as well XCU (200 higher losses, varying 8.5 23.7 , other consistently below . Our results show that it is possible maintain good turfgrass while keeping low (i.e., <4 selecting the ideal combination source, rate, frequency.

Fall fertilization timing effects on nitrate leaching and turfgrass color and growth.

Fall season fertilization is a widely recommended practice for turfgrass. Fertilizer applied in the fall, however, may be subject to substantial leaching losses. A field study was conducted in Connecticut to determine the timing effects of fall fertilization on nitrate N (NO3-N) leaching, turf color, shoot density, and root mass of a 90% Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.), 10% creeping red f...

Reducing nitrate leaching losses from a Taupo pumice soil using a nitrification inhibitor eco-n

The decline in water quality in Lake Taupo has been attributed to nitrogen (N) leaching from surrounding land areas. Pastoral agriculture has been identified as a significant contributor to this N transfer to the lake through animal urine deposition. There is therefore an immediate need for new management options to reduce N losses. The objective of this study was to measure the effectiveness o...

The third chapter in a story about turfgrass nitrate leaching

Nitrate concentrations of groundwater are increasing in residential areas. One probable cause is input of nitrogen fertilizers to maintain healthy turfgrass. This study was conducted to evaluate differences in nitrate concentrations in soil water between sites fertilized with chemical or organic fertilizer. To obtain nitrate concentrations leaching below turfgrass and evaluate the impact to gro...

Influence of Overwatering and Fertilization on Nitrogen Losses from Home Lawns

Fertilized home lawns represent a potential source of NO,-N contamination to groundwater and surface waters. The waterborne losses of inorganic N from Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) turf subjected to three levels of N fertilization (0, 97, and 244 kg N ha"' yr~' as urea and methylene urea) and two irrigation regimes (scheduled by tensiometer and overwatering with 3.75 cm of water per wee...

Nutrient leaching from mixed-species Florida residential landscapes.

Nutrient losses from residential lawns and landscapes can negatively impact water quality. Information about nutrient leaching from established residential landscapes containing a mixture of woody ornamental plants and turfgrass is limited. The objective of our study was to determine the effect of vegetation cover (turfgrass vs. woody ornamental) on nutrient leaching from established landscapes...
